Hi, does anyone know where I can get balanced protein seasoning by Better Living Enterprises? Their website requires a password even for guests!

Thank you,

Couldn't help with the site, and I think the product they carry is Dr. Jensen's protein seasoning, which is different from the no-longer-available Dr. Bronner's...

HELP! I am desperate to find something with the same taste as the no longer available Dr. Bronner's protein seasoning any suggestions?
carol

04/26/05
We enjoyed Dr. Bronner's protein seasoning for many years. I'm wondering if a powdered soy sauce (or powdered tamari or shoyu) would be close enough. I don't know where to find those either. Any suggestions??
ellen

I use a Swiss vegetable bouillon tablet called "Moraga" brand as my current substitute. The problem with the soy suce or soy sauce powder, is, it has more salt than salt! Moraga is available salt free, the flavor is excellent, and although it is pricey, to me it is worth it. I found it at Whole Foods with the spices.

If you don't mind, please let me know.
Your attention to this matter will be greatly appreciated.

When I was young, a long time ago, my favorite treat was to slice a nice ripe haas avocado in half, put a few drops of Bronner's sauce where the pit was, mush it up and eat it with his corn chips. My mouth salivates just thinking of that. His family should reinstate that amazing sauce in his honor. I'll try some Moraga, but I'm skeptical....

I was raised in the sixties and remember well of Dr. Bronner's Soy-Corn Chips that came coated with, you said it!... Dr. Bronners "Balanced Protein Seasoning" powder.
God were those addictive! talk about great with gaucamole!
Yes, it had peppermint and orange peel in the ingredients, but even as a kid, I didn't care... ...They were just too damn good!

It was then much later in my life, many, many chip bags later. I think it was about 1997?.. That's when I knew then, that life would never be as I once knew.

This feeling resulted after having gone to the health food store and noticed that his chips were gone, not-a-one!
His powdered "Balanced Protein Seasoning" was no where to be found, only strange looks by clerks much younger than I, of my odd request. An "All One" loss to mankind ...God hate getting older!

I have fond memories of Dr. Bronners Balanced Protein Seasoning as a child as well. My mom put it on brown rice, vegetables, and in just about every other dish we ate. Boy do I miss the good old days.

I met Dr. Bronner himself many many years ago when I went to buy a barrel of his seasoning for my restaurant in southern California. He really had a passion for his work. His family wrote that he had not left them any resources for the formula for the seasoning- no recipe- I miss it, too.

I used to love Dr Bronners Seasoning on brown rice and salad!!!... Trully miss it. What a cult taste that was. It brings me back to my best memories as a child. I only wish they could bring it back. Braggs liquid aminos is not even half as tasty.

I still have a (very old) shaker of Dr. Bronner's Seasoning. Thinking about sending it to the lab so it could be backwards-engineered. I've tried sprinkling it on regular corn chips, but it's not the same. Man, I miss those chips...

Veronica, if you do this, I long to know the results! I am sure it had dried soy sauce in it- sure wonder what else...

Veronica, I would love to participate in this endeavor as well and would be willing to pitch in some of the money for analysis. I absolutely loved that flavor.

I spoke with Dr, Bronners son a handful of years ago. He told me that he rummaged trough every nook and cranny looking for one more chip. As mentioned already, no writeen record was left of the recipe.

My Mom used to go to a organic farm in Suffolk County on Long Island (New York) in the 60's and I am pretty sure that is where she also bought the Dr Bronner's chips. I had forgotten about them until the 90's and only then noticed that they weren't available. I wrote to the company and was told that they were only doing the soap these days. I can just barely remember some of the cool foods she used to buy back then.
Kim
07/27/08
I recall one ingredient in the chips was yogurt--perhaps powdered yogurt. I think that's what gave them a slight bite. I don't know if the protein powder had this in it as well. I miss those chips like crazy, especially the puffs. I would also contribute to Veronica's reverse engineering costs.
ellen
07/28/08
When I talked to the family a few years ago, it seemed that the good doctor did not pass on all his recipes intact- so you can get the soaps, but the foods are gone. Sigh.

Has any one had Dr. Bronners on popcorn? Youn had to melt it with the butter because it got caked up,but it was delicious! They used to sell another brand that tasted exactly the sane at bonnys.

I miss Drn Bronners Soy powdere as well. My favorite way to use it was on Popcorn. Fresh corn on the cob has never tasted as good since. Barnard Jensen made a powder that I think was the exact same product. I think it is just dried version of the liquid soy product that they make. Both are very sucepatable to moisture and must be kept in a sealed container. I remember always having to check the bottles in the store to see if the product had set up. Otherwise you were just buying a large bullion cube and it was useless for sprinkling on stuff.

AAARRRGHH! I, too, cannot believe that Bronner's liquid is gone for eternity! I also long for the avocado half with that, salt, a sprinkle of garlic powder and a pinch of cayenne. Oh, la la, was it heaven!
This is my biggest problem. It was the "secret ingredient" in my vegetable soup, which the family has long enjoyed. Now they want the recipe.

Oh, well, the only thing that remains the same in this life is change. Bragg's does not come close. I guess in am going to stop mourning and move on to Moraga.

Just a thought - if any Bronner's liquid still exists, can't someone analyze it? I think that the Bronner family might then be willing to produce it again.

Paix,
Sheila

corn chips
We love Dr. Bonner's corn chips. My dad started eating Dr. Bonner's corn chips when he was twenty in 1969. I've been eating them since I was a baby. We wrote to the company and asked for the secret recipe but they haven't written back. Would you be interested in a "be in" in front of Dr. Bonner headquarters to bring back the corn chips? People talk about a "big mac" attack but were having a corn chip attack and there's no way to relieve the pain. We don't know what exactly made them so good but they are a million times better now that they are gone forever.

I'm 24, I can say, after the amazing experiences of it on popcorn, when I was, maybe seven, in Michigan. I used to just put the powder on my hand and lick it straight. HAHA, maybe they don't want to reveal the ingredient cause it was some illegal addictive drug. Well, I've taken all the notes I can, gonna check all these hitherto stated substitute potentials, I'll prob'ly just combine them all in some mad-scientist frenzy. Wish me luck. and let's all cross our fingers for some future synthesis of Dr. Bronner's mystery.

I asked for the chips at my local coop; so sad to learn here of their dicontinuance.

Such an important gustatory memory of the 70's for me!

Re INGREDIENTS: I believe kelp or dulse or other powdered seaweed formed the character of the taste. Either noted on pkg. or my taste buds!

2 1/2 years since I last posted on this blog... funny. The ingredients of the good doctor's products were of course on the labels if anyone has one? I wonder that the family wouldn't at least have that? Also were they big enough to have employees that maybe knew how they were made? We need a first class sleuth.
ellen
11/16/09
I actually have a half bottle of the precious stuff, and it does not have a helpful ingredient label. It very proudly said no salt, but was VERY salty; I suspect that the soy ingredient was dehydrated soy sauce. It was always basically a family business, and the doctor kept the special recipes to himself; the kids don't even have them, just the soap recipes.

I contacted Dr Bronners and they said at that time that they lost the recipe for the mineral salt - monly dr bronner knew it - they were interested in obtaining some so they could figure out his formula. If you still have the mineral salt please contact the company and see if they want it.

What a wonderful seasoning to have. I read a post that said she used to put it in her hand and lick it off. I did the same thing. It was just that good. Love all the stories...and so happy to know I'm not the only one remembers that incredible taste. I'm only 36 but my first job at age 9 was sleeping floors in a health food store in the early 80s...and those Dr. Bronner's chips...ah...nothing has ever come close to that taste! And the seasoning...and the soaps (at least those are still around)...I haven't seen the chips in stores in many moons and I figured something like this must have happened. I sincerely hope someday the recipe is resurrected...his food products were pure magic. :)

Dr Bronners
I used to work for Dr Bronner in the late 60's early 70's. I helped type some of those great labels. He was a neighbor and friend of my parents and mine. Interesting man. He always gave me lots of foods and soaps. I was just telling my 26 year old son about the chips and decided to look them up. I loved those chips, he also had cheese puffs that were healthy and tasted similar to the chips. YUM YUM!. I also really like his seasonings. For a short time, Frito Lay took over the chip business but I heard that Dr Bronner did not like how they handled it and they considered him a pain so they sold it back. I have not seen the chips or puffs since and think that might have something to do with it. Maybe Frito Lay had that in the sell back agreement? These were the best ever chips in the whole world. If we all get together here and contact Frito Lay, maybe they will make them again? Thanks for the memories.

Dr. Bronner's Corn Chips
One of my first jobs was working at The Good Earth Health Bar in the back of George's Surf Shop in Huntington Beach, CA in the late 70s. Holy cow, I've been searching sporadically for decades for those Corn Chips and found this site! I'm with the poster who would eat half an avo with Dr. B's chips, yummmmm. I have found at Mother's Market in Costa Mesa, a corn chip that's exactly the same as the ole' Dr. Bronner's chips, but WITHOUT any seasoning. Love the texture, but miss that fabulous seasoning. I'm marking this page so I can visit for updates *hope hope hope* :D

Bernard Jensen Quick-Sip Boullion is apparently as close as we can come to duplicating the good old days of Bronner's Balanced Mineral Seasoning broth.
A 16 oz. bottle costs $10.49 + S & H of $7.50 (Free S & H for orders over $50).
They handle all orders by phone at (800) 755-4027. Hours: M-F 8-4 Pacific.
Interestingly enough they have neither a Web site nor e-mail!
So Mitchell, you are on, as the Bronner's firm has no intention of returning to any manufacturing of food because all the recipes died with Dr. Bronner and the sons are real professionals. Please contact me at the e-mail above. I called your number above and got a recording that it is not in service.

Another aging hippie who would give his right arm for some of Dr. Broner's soy amino protein seasoning. I remember you had to get it fresh or it caked. I would go to several health food stores turning the containers upside down, shaking them to see if they were still uncaked. It wasn't the same having to mix the lumps with water or melted butter. Might as well use soy sauce. I did find a replacement for it for a while. Dr. Bernard Jensen made something almost identical with his name on it. Tasted exactly the same. I don't know why Jensen quit making it but I would think that his family would have the recipe.
