I lost my roaster directions. How long do I cook a 4 1/2 pound roast in the roaster oven? What temp? Can I put potatoes & carrots in with the roast? Do I add water? Can I use a cooking bag? |

It sounds like you are working on a pot roast? The roaster is excellent for moist heat cooking such as pot roast and brisket and the standard oven better for dry roasts such as prime rib. Use exactly the same temp as for a regular oven, DO preheat the roaster. Start checking for doneness with a meat thermometer or quick read thermometer about 1/2 hour before it is done, and remember that the roaster needs to stand 15 minutes out of the oven before slicing for maximum juiciness. Yes, you can put the vegetables in. If you use an oven bag, put it in a casserole or 9x13 dish so the bag is not against the bottom of the roaster and make sure it is not touching any of the sides, either. The roaster gets hot enough over the elements (which are on the bottom in some roasters, sides in others) that it can melt and burn through the bag, fusing the plastic to the sides of the roaster and to the meat. |
