Here are a few questions -- a. When using stainless steel pots or other metal pots, will stirring with a metal fork scratch the pot? If it does, will the scratching release metal into the food? b. Can scratching occur with glass pots? |
ellen ellenskitchen2017@gmail.com 08/20/01 |
30 years ago, Adelle Davis cautioned that while stainless steel pots are chemically inert, burning them and then scouring them caused the pots to release metals into the food. We KNOW this occurs with aluminum pots, just from seeing the color change when cooking acid food in them, and we have all seen what happens with non-stick coatings that are overheated or scratched. Corning cautions that glass pots can break or explode when heated after scratching or chipping them. So the best bet is wooden or plastic utensils, gentle heat and careful handling. Keep on cooking! |

Glass Cooking Pots Where can I find glass cooking pots? I have a treasured (Corning) set of 3 and have been looking for more, with no luck. The pots I currently own, pink in color, were a gift and I think purchased @ KMart. I love them, use them with care, and feel that they are the best way to go as I move into organic foods and a more healthy cooking program. I want to eliminate as much nickel and aluminium from my life as I can. Ergo, glass pots! Where are they?! Judy Kolars |
Ellen ellenskitchen2017@gmail.com 02/01/02 |
Love it when a question has an easy answer! Corning still makes the "Vision" glass cookware, you can buy it at any Corning-Revere outlet store. They have also added frying pans to the line, which are OK, though I still prefer my old non-stainless steel wok for fast cooking. Also, there is almost always a set or two of Corning Vision cookware on sale on EBay at a good price. Keep on cooking-Ellen |

Corning has discontinued its entire Visions line of glass cookware. I've heard this from its warranty replacement center. All gone. Anybody know of a good glass alternative to Visions? |

I too am looking for glass pots. I went to Walmart, Foley's, Sears, Penny's, Mervyns, Target,Dilliards. Nothing. The salespeople had not even heard of glass pots! Has anyone been able to locate any? I too am apprehensive of putting any more metals in my body than I already have. |

"vision" dutch oven Is it OK to brown a pork-roast in my "vision" dutch oven on an electric stove? |
ellen |
Hi, Jeanette, Yep, as long as you follow the cautions above, but it will be slow! Vision is not too good at browning. How about drowning under the broiler or in a cast iron [an or a skillet? Ellen |
Chef Gregory gregoryskitchen@yahoo.com 09/25/02 |
Head to Chinatown and purchase a ceramic stew pot. Unglazed exterior with dark brown glazed interior. Most often seen in Hakka cooking for delicios braised meals. (Try the roast pork and oyster stew with tofu and shrimp paste at Yuet Lee-Stockton and Broadway-SF. Awesome!)It works well for any soup, stew, or braised dish. Heat slowly and never empty. |

Debbie, Doris, and other "Vision seekers" Corning isn't making Vision any more, they had a bad problem with the pots breaking when dropped a few inches, such as just from the dish drainer to the counter. You can still find it on EBay, and that is the only source I know for it. Just be very careful to follow the directions, don't heat it empty. and don't drop it! Ellen |

I only recently lost one of my vision pots that hit "just right" on a metal corner. I had them for more than 15 years with no problems or breakage (and I am hard on my pots and pans. Unfortunately with the company not making it anymore, the cost has shot up on ebay. For those that like Vision, I recommend contacting Corning and let them know there is still a following for this product line. helpcenter@worldkitchenhelp.com |

EEK! I just bought 2 10 inch frying pans off of E-Bay to add to my visionware collection. How serious of a problem is this Exploding phenomenon? Have used mine over the years with no problems. Does the Glass become weaker with time? |
ellen ellenskitchen2017@gmail.com 12/22/02 |
Bill, Visions is off the market, a small but very noticeable group of accidents with shattering have occured, and you have to decide. This does NOT seem to be related to aging, or the height of the drop. I have used them 20 years and only ever had one crack, but there really are a few risks. It is up to you! Ellen |

Visions I am heartbroken about Visions not being made anymore, and need an alternative. Please help!! I see that others are in the same situation. Mine never broke except when I did something-like dropped it, or slammed it against a hard surface. Does anyone make top of the stove glass pots? PLEASE. |
suzanne shgolden@earthlink.net 12/31/02 |
Visions/glass cookware I often cook in regular corningware on top of the stove. Just check under the casserole dish handle to see if it is oven-only or okay for range top. So far, no problems at reasonable heats with those rated for range-top. |

I, too, have discovered that my favorite cookware, Visions, has been discontinued. At the factory outlet store today they told me to buy it on Ebay. I have two pieces of cranberry Visions Corningware cookware - a small skillet and a pouring saucepan with lid - both with NONSTICK lining in the bottoms. Are these safe for the microwave? What about the new smooth-top oven ranges? |
Margaret maglaw21@worldnet.att.net 02/28/03 |
An expert from Corningware contacted me to state that the Visions Corningware with silverstone coating (nonstick) is not safe for the microwave because of the coating. Also, Visions should not be used on a smooth-top range because glass against glass causes scratches that could permanently damage the range top. Margaret |

visions and ceramic cooktops In response to Laura, yes visions works well on ceramic cooktops. We have used our vision ware numerous times on our ceramic top stove. It actually has some advantage over using vision ware in the microwave because the handles are less likely to get hot. |

Corning Cookware Teflon Problems I have a cranberry set of visions cookware, all with the teflon coating. Have had these for 15+ years. In the last year, the coating has started peeling off in places in some of the saucepans. Does anyone know why this would occur and, should I toss them on the assumption that the coating is harmfull if swallowed? Second, I have always used these in the microwave with no problems, even though I have read (even in this column) that you can't use these in the microwave (supposedly only the non-teflon version can be used in this way). Has anyone had a problem with these in the microwave and, if not, why are people writing that it can't be done? |

I ha ve found this wonderful place where they sell raw ingrediants and other things we use daily. This for those of us who are educating ourselves about the poisons the government and the people who sell them allow in our food, water, and daily products. I frlt blessed to have found this site. It's called Self Health Resource Center; http://www.shrc.net/ . Yeas they do sell non metal spoons forks and knives. But I had to keep searching for the pot spoons and everthing else. It is quite pricey. I took previous advice and bought 14 pcs of corning ware, stove top and baking on ebay. I know I saved alot of money this way even with shipping and handling. Be back soon. |

Need HELP with Cleaning Vision Cookwear?? Recently replaced metal/stainless cookwear and replaced it with Corning Visionwear. I'm not a great cook & have been burning food & pots often. Suggestions are welcome to decrease burning food & best method of cleaning, especially burnt spots. I don't want to use anything abrasive or damaging to their surfaces. Also, after looking on e-bay I hit the local thrift shops and found a 12 piece set for $30.00. I will probably continue to stock up while they are still able to locate. |

Best pots and pans for gas cooking? My sister and her husband-to-be registered for the All-Clad Master Chef 2 10-Piece Cookware Set before they bought their house. Their stove is gas. Neither one of them is experienced with gas cooking, but for some reason they believe they need this very expensive pot and pan set, which evenly distributes heat. I could understand it for electric cooking, which I have now, but gas cooking seems to already distribute heat evenly. Am I wrong in thinking that they should consider registering for something else? If not, what would you recommend? |
