hi i have a raw cast iron pan that has developed some scratches and chips on the surface, i have had it for several years and have seasoned it between cleanings, but the cooking surface now concerns me, is it still safe to use? how long are these supposed to last? perhaps i got a low quality pan or damaged it somehow? thanks. |

If you bought this pan in the USA, the metal is safe. Usually these scratches are from metal forks, I usually use wooden utensils with mine. It is good for 50 years unless you burn the bottom out of it. The newer pans are a coarser iron, but that is not a danger. You can blowtorch off the stuff and re-season and start again (no kidding) but if it is not sticking, you don't have to do a thing! Keep on cooking- ellen |
