We're inviting approx. 80-90 people to my daughter's school for a morning reception at 10:00am. She's at a special needs school. Having the usual, cake, nuts, mints, pickles, and punch. I've got a good idea about the size of cake I need, but the other items I'm not sure of quantities. I'd appreciate some help. My husband and I are paying for the reception. Thanks! |

Hi, Debby, In my other life as an RN, I regularly work with special needs kids and their families, so I have a couple of thoughts/questions for you. First, has this menu been used for this function before? With the wide range of swallowing/eating problems and allergies I have seen in this community, it seems like a not-to-kid-friendly selection. How many guests are the kids and how many adults, including all the parents aides and teachers? Do you have the time/energy to do a little baking or food making for this function? Would you consider an all juice and sparkling water punch to avoid extra sugar and all dyes? Write back. |

As it turns out, I'm also an RN and have worked with elem. and special needs children in the school setting for some time now. Having our daughter has been a life-changing event to say the least. The majority of our guests will be adults(friends, family, teachers, etc.) so our menu is really ok. They're rotating the classes to come through to see us, but won't really be feeding the children there. In the past, teachers have taken cake and other goodies back to their rooms where they can feed them easier. They already have snacks, etc. suited to each child's needs. Plus, this is prior to lunch so they won't be feeding the kids a lot at this time anyway. I'm inviting approx. 90 people but I don't anticipate but about 3/4 of these to come. I'm open to other choices of punch. A committee is planning this event so I've left it up to them to choose the food. We weren't planning on a big spread of food anyway. I only wanted to help them decide how much of everything to get. We're limited on our time for the reception because it's at the school. We had to keep it simple. Thanks! Debby |
