Glace oranges and lemons

Last xmas I made glace oranges and lemons and used the 14 day method.
I sliced the oranges and lemons about an eighth of an inch thick but I found that after all the boiling etc the fruit part of the slice disappeared a bit on some of the fruit.
Anyone have any tips on how to keep the slices more intact?

Ellen,
I'm about to start my glacé oranges and lemons.
I am planning to use your 14 day method but should I boil my orange and lemon slices a few times in water as per the candied peel method?

It will be hard on the fruit part. You might do some of each and see which you like better.
