I make the mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving in the morning and store in a crockpot until dinner. How do I keep the bottom of the mashed potatoes from getting crusty? One of my friends suggested putting crumpled tin foil on top of the heating element. Can I do this safely?

NONONO aluminum foil on the element. Not safe. Can actually melt/fuse. You can get a metal bowl that just fits inside the crock, put water between crock and bowl, replenish as needed.
