Ceramic Stovetop

I got a brand new Samsung stove with the ceramic cooktop. I have read back through the threads and see many about spills but only a few about scratches. Have only used a few times and have many smaller scratches and one large which was admittedly my fault. But with all the smaller ones I can't imagine what this is going to look like in a year? Is there anything that works for scratches? I also find this cooktop hard to clean as it has to be buffed every time. Some certainly must be better than others as my sister has had hers for four years with no scratches and just wipes it down with a damp cloth.

It sounds like you need to check your pot bottoms, you may need new pots for Christmas, and of course, not slide the pots on the burners, which is a hard habit to break. Does your sisiter have the same brand and model?

I have a GE creamic stovetop and the largest burner now has cracks all through it. I do not have any othe the pots that you describe. All my pots are fairly new and sit flat on the burner.
Is there anything else that could cause the glass to crack? From what you have said in other threads, it appears to be cheaper to buy a new one than to get a new top.

You can replace the glass top only for 2-500 dollars, depending on the brand. If replacing, consider a closed burner NOT ceramic top...

I have a Jenn Air stove with ceramic cooking surfaces--drop-in units with two burners per side. I just bought a large stock pot and found that its diameter is too great to allow full surface contact as the pot rests on the lip surrounding the cooking surface. It seems like I'm out of luck and will be limited to pots with a small enough diameter to allow full contact. Any suggestions?
Thank you.

A hot plate for the stock pot.

My gosh, it is ridiculous how the pots have to exactly fit exactly. The companies that make the pots need to keep this in mind when they are designing these pans.

They suggest that the pan be within 1 inch of the diameter of the burner, which gives a little leeway.

This site has been soooo helpful for me with my new glass cooktop range. Can't find the answer to this question, though: What are the "rules" about setting hot pans from the oven on the cold glasstop? Thanks!

This can start a crack on the top! As can setting it on a damp dishtowel on the top. That is one of the inconveniences- we are so used to pulling pans out of the oven and resting them on the stove top.
Get a pad and put it on the counter next to the top, to save your top.

Thanks so much! That'll definitely take some getting used to. I'm adjusting to this stove -- and it DOES take some getting used to. I've never been so obsessive about cleaning something in my life! I am terrified I'll get a permanent spot and someone will have to talk me down from a high ledge. This is sooo not me, all this obsession about cleaning. I'll lighten up, eventually, right? It does, however, cook food amazingly evenly. So far, nothing sticks to the bottom of the pots because there are no "hot spots." I like it, but it sure takes some getting used to.

I am starting to relax a bit with my new ( Dec.) stove. I was also obsessing and cleaning it like crazy. Once I got the pan size thing figured out, I'm pretty happy with it.

You can replace the glass top (cost 2-500) but they are ALL hard to keep clean.

I have a new black glass stove top by Jenn-air, that has only been in use for less than a week. Already I can see a cloudy spot on one of the burners. I don't have copper or aluminum pans so does anyone know what caused this?

Maybe nobody told you that the OUTSIDE of the pots needs to be scoured absolutely clean to help prevent this? There are cleaning tips on several of the ceramic cook top threads. It is a very common result.

Thank you ellen, no I didn't know that one, but I looked at the pot and it doesn't look dirty at all. I don't suppose it will come off either? Am seriously thinking of taking it back and ordering a coil. Unfortunately we don't have gas here and we are not hooked up to propane. I thought I was taking such good care of it too, cleaning it thoroughly after each use!!!

You might try the regular Mr. Clean Magic eraser before you give up, just be sure to rinse and dry after.

I goofed and let my teakettle burn dry on my new black ceramic stove top. It even melted a little. I have cleaned it up and used both the cream cleaner and the razor blade scrapper and have now a fairly smooth surface but all around the ring is white, some areas larger than others. Is it safe to use even tho it doesn't look nice?
|
ellen

Yes, but I would turn it to the lowest possible heat and scrape some more before using. And keep at medium high or lower.

I too have a whitish ring in one of my burners. Just bought the stove 2 months ago and have used it very genltly. I used all the recommended cleaning supplies on it. Not sure is the ring is permanent. I would never buy this type of stove again. Too hard on the nerves. I am afraid all the burner will look like this. what do I do

Just bought a "Kenmore Elite" ceramic cooktop and am really nervous. Wish we could have purchased gas but we are on propane. All my pans are Revere Ware with copper bottoms. Can I use them? If not what do you recommend I buy? I also have a brand new set of aluminum pans someone gave me. Help!!!!! thank you
|
ellen
10/08/09
|
You can use them. Before the first time, scrub the bottoms really thoroughly and rinse the bottoms really thoroughly. Never put them on the burner empty, even "for just a minute" and don't let them cook dry. Keep the burners at medium high or lower. Use pans that fit the burenr- 1 inch or less difference between the burner and the diameter of the pan. Good luck.

Ellen what does it mean "a bridge " in order to use a griddle on a ceramic cooktop? Thanks so much again
|
ellen
10/08/09
|
Bottoms must be perfectly flat, most circulon has ridges, just look and check. A bridge element is built in at the factory under the glass to allow you to use 2 burners under one pan or large griddle. If you don't have it, you can crack the top trying to use the two burners under one pan or griddle.

help!!! I am staying at my friends appartment for a month and my boyfriend cooked me a stir fry dinner on her ceramic black miele stove. Once he had finished we notice surface scratches all over the hob!!!! will Maas work on this do you think? The scratches don't feel deep although there looks like a lot...please help!!!
|
ellen

Start now with the MAAS. He probably shook the wok back and forth, standard with stirfry and absolutely deadly on these tops. You may not be able to get all the scratches out, if you can feel them at all they are very hard to remove.

I can't really feel anything... so I am hoping MAAs will help. Tried to find some today in Home depot but may just order on line as they didn't have it. Fingers crossed!! Is there a special colour polish to get at all? Thanks

Not that I know of.

I have just ordered the concerntrated MAAS polish on line. We were thinking tho...the scratches seem to be quite wide and a grey/silver colour. Almost as if the pan he used has scratched the hob...taking off the first layer..is that possible? if so, will the MAAs still work do you think? Thank you Ellen for your advice.
|
ellen
10/18/09
|
That is just what it probably did do and why the manuals for these tops stress that you not slide spin or shake the pans on the surface. But it may be color from the bottom of the pot, so that would come off.

How can we know the difference? We have tried to use SOS on it lightly but It didn't seem to make any difference. So I am assuming it is scratched.
|
ellen
10/19/09
|
No, NO SOS. It is glass!!! If the MAAS takes it off, it is discoloration; if it doesn't it is scratches. You are making it worse with your efforts, not better.

oh dear...feel like crying! well we will wait for the maas to arrive and hope for the best. Thank you

If a lid has popped of a saucepan and chiped the edge of a ceramic cooktop. The damage is only cosmetic, i.e. not cracked through ... what do you recommend?
|
ellen
10/29/09
|
Ignore it. If it is rough and might cut someone you can smooth it down with emery paper.

877-808-4195 is the number for the Frigidaire parts department. They may be able to replace your manual. Also, they made a Kenmore same design, so maybe Sears parts can help.

Hi. I have a Maytag MER57300AAA with one of the burners not heating and the other one not being able to adjust the heat.
First, to fix the non working burner do I need to replace the whole burner element or just the limiter? The cost is more for the new burner element.
Second, how do I fix the other burner to be able to adjust the hotness of the burner.
Thanks

Usually, the thermostatic control goes out To fix, you take the top off, replace the burner, and replace the top.

I have had my LG glass top stove for almost 2 years and have had to have repairs twice. The first time the whole top unit had to be replaced, the second time one of the burners stopped working. While the repairman was here he said I could use a flat razor to get burnt stuff off of the glass top. He said that if you don't get it off it may crack the top.
|
ellen

It can indeed start a crack. Cleaner and a razor are recommended. You have to keep these tops and the pan bottoms absolutely clean, and it is crucial not to cook on a dirty burner.

Hi, I have a ceramic stove top, and just recieved a new set of Paula Deen Porcelain Enamel Cookware. The instructions suggest not using on glass or ceramic stovetops. What would the harm be? Also, most brands have the one qt. saucepan in with the set, which is sooo much smaller than the burner. Can this be used, or is it a waste?
|
ellen
02/13/10
|
The porcelain can melt and fuse permanently to glass top. If you do use them on this top, NEVER put the heat above medium high.
With these burners, the burner needs to be 1 inch within the size of the pot, or the thermostatic control won't work as well.

i've recently noticed the corner of my gas range ceramic top has 2 chipped pieces. can i use crazy glut to mend it. the cracks are not near the burners at all.
|
ellen

I have never used or recommended crazy glue on these because of the heat. It does work with glass, so you might try it if it is chips. If it is cracks, no, and start saving for the replacement top...

thank you ellen, it worked at least for now. i basically glued it not to lose the small chipped pieces, although they were still connected to the underglue base, i wanted to reinforce them. thankfully its the far edge of the glasstop and not near the burner. i can only guess it chipped and cracked with a large heavy pot being slid off instead of lifted. lesson learned!

Ceramic - Glass Stovetop
what is the difference between glass and ceramic stovetop. If I didn't purchase it and don't have the paperwork, How do I know which is what I have? All it has on it is Frigidaire Gallery Series. I need to figure out what to use to clean it, what type of cookware I can use, etc.

Hey there,
This site is wonderful! I have been giong crazy out of my mind keeping my stupid stovetop clean. Now I am getting little dips in the cooktop, not chips but indents.. they are all over one of the burners.. what is happening. This stove isnt even 8 months old yet. Its a whirlpool and I spent a good $800 bucks on it. Its crazy that there are indents in the top already.. any help :(
|
ellen

Laura, these are usually used as interchangeable terms, glass top and ceramic top have the same bad habits.
Elsa, at 8 months it should still be under warranty and pitting like that is NOT normal. Get the service rep out to look at it before the warranty runs out.

What is the best brand of cookware to purchase for my new LG glass-topped stove? I am
VERY afraid of scratches!!!
|
ellen

Jan, youWILL get scratches. Someone will slide a pan around, or cook in one with something on the bottom; it is the nature of these tops to get scratched.
That said, don't use regular cast iron if you are dead set on trying to avoid them. Other than that, most readers have good luck with multi-ply (aluminum core, stainless outside) flat pans.
